Chapter Thirty-Two

We all settle into a kind of rhythm. I am cautious and observant. And I begin my work of getting to know Isabel properly this time, trying to put her more at ease around me. I invite her to my luncheons and actually introduce her. I resist the urge to scream when I see her smug face light up when she shares the news of her engagement. The women around us nod in surprise as they offer their congratulations. I remind myself this is only temporary.

Even William and her appear to be getting on, which makes me wary and I try my best to warn him without irritating him. He rolls his eyes and kisses me on the forehead. We’re tied together by our shared secrets, and I have learned over the years that the only way for me to manage is to go along with things as best I can. I have to find a way of talking to him about Maya and what I overheard, without him thinking I’m becoming delusional or obsessive. Because that’s what he’ll say. He’ll try and turn it around on me.

Despite outward appearances, the overheard conversation between Miles and Isabel continues to gnaw at me, and I wish they would confide in me so I can help them figure out who it actually could be that’s sending the messages.

It’s been almost a couple of weeks now since Isabel arrived and the weather is starting to turn sour. I’m sitting in my bedroom, looking out my beautiful windows into the square below. The leaves are beginning to fully drop from their branches, leading us further into the depths of winter. Rain begins to lash against the window, almost out of the blue, and I flinch in shock at the sudden storm. The darkness of the afternoon is setting in, and streetlights begin to float on.

I have to keep my thoughts bright – I’m hosting tonight after all. I’ve concocted an intimate dinner party with some friends. Some friends that I hope will unwittingly help me get more information out of Isabel than I’ve been able to achieve so far. She is still deeply suspicious of me. But I can be patient; I have time on my side to get her to trust me. I hope.

I have slowly and carefully been building up a picture of Isabel. More than once, she has become flustered when I’ve interrupted her when she is sending a text message, and she is extremely private about her belongings. Who could she be talking to and what is she hiding?

I have gone into their room a couple of times too when she and Miles have been out and she appears to have some items locked in her suitcase. I rattled it to check. A simple key lock, but I need that key. I just need to find out where she keeps it.

Tonight, over dinner, I will attempt to eek more information out of her. For now though, I have time to reflect and plan.
